Rosalie at home in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Behold I am the servant of the Lord; May it be to me according to your word.

Luke 1:38

Today we hear the familiar story of a young Jewish woman, living at a time of occupation and oppression. Her openness to God’s will exposes her to possible rejection and even the risk of being stoned to death under the law. As we listen, we celebrate Mary’ courage and strength which brought salvation to our broken world, through Christ.

We can also celebrate the many women today who show courage and resilience in the face of great challenges. Rosalie, aged 37, lives In the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country still recovering from years of devastating civil war. From the age of fifteen, she was forced to become a child soldier, exposed to unimaginable trauma and hardship. Now she has seven children and dreams of a better future for them. Thanks to training from our local partner, Caritas Bukavu, Rosalie has been able to start a small business, save so her children are able to go to school and inspire other members of her community to overcome the violence of the past. They are working towards a more peaceful and harmonious world for future generations.

Today as we rejoice in Mary’s response to God’s invitation, let’s pray for all the women of courage today, who actively participate in bringing about God’s reign of justice and peace. And let’s try to be open to the possibility that God is calling us to do the same.

Advent prayer

Loving God,
inspire us, through the example of Mary,
to have the courage to say ‘yes’ to your call,
trusting that nothing is impossible to you.
Amen.

Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.
