A woman reading her Bible.
The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary.
The prophet Isaiah speaks of one with the power to sustain the weary with a word. There are times when we all feel weary – perhaps worn out by illness, grief, difficult relationships or simply the daily demands of life.
Sometimes it might seem as if the whole world is weary. Global challenges such as the climate crisis, conflict, racism and poverty can make us feel worn down and anxious.
Yesterday’s gospel told us that Jesus was “troubled in his spirit”. I imagine he, too, was weary – from the demands of teaching and healing, the constant threats from those who wished to destroy him and the lack of understanding from even his closest followers and friends.
What words sustained Jesus as he walked towards the cross? Words from the Hebrew Scriptures which we know he cherished? Words from his Father claiming him as the beloved Son?
What words will sustain us as we join Jesus this Holy Week? How might we sustain the weary with our own words?
Prayer
Lord God,
thank you for the grace
that we can find in your word.
Sustain us when we are weary,
so we, in turn, may strengthen others.
Amen.
