Father Johanes Zevito, director of Caritas Chinhoyi in Zimbabwe
You shall love your neighbour as yourself.
What’s your favourite bible verse? Father Johanes Zevito, director of Caritas Chinhoyi in Zimbabwe, has a ready reply for this question, pointing to the vital teaching we hear in today’s gospel: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” As he explains:
“I like this passage because it shows that we are responsible for the welfare of the other. No one wants to hurt themselves. No one wants to sleep without anything that they have taken as food. No one wants to fail to have access to clean water. No one wants to fail to have access to food. So when you love yourself, you love your neighbour the way you love yourself… each and every human being is important; whatever I need, my brother, my sister also need the same.”
For Fr Johanes, Jesus’s great command is a motivation and guide for his work in Rushinga. This is one of the most vulnerable districts of Zimbabwe, prone to drought and facing additional challenges due to healthcare shortages and high rates of gender-based violence. In such conditions, neighbours really need to be able to depend on one another.
May this verse also inspire each of us to show love to all our global neighbours.
Prayer
God of all people,
help us to live faithfully,
growing in love for you
and our neighbours,
both near and far.
Amen.
