A community garden in Zimbabwe
For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.
Facing honestly the brokenness of the world, the prophet Isaiah dares to dream of the earth God intended. A place where there will be no more weeping and all people will live well into old age, having planted their crops and eaten their fruit.
We live in a world where people get sick, where violence destroy lives and livelihoods and the climate crisis causes suffering. Yet we also have the hope that God is doing something new. In our work at CAFOD, we encounter many communities who are working hard to overcome the challenges of poverty and injustice.
In Zimbabwe, Father Johanes Zevito has seen signs of hope breaking through. He tells us: “The lives of people are changing, and they are happy. I see relationships being rebuilt and communities improving. People who didn't have access to food now do, and school enrolment has increased because of the feeding programs.
“I see a future where people are happy and working together to build a better community. I also see signs of hope in the women and girls I work with, as they are now involved in decision-making and are taking on roles they never thought they could.”
Today, let’s join Isaiah in trusting that, through the power of God, transformation is possible. And let’s allow this vision of the future to shape our living now, joining in God’s creative work – because a better world needs all of us.
