A prayer for all those affected by the earthquake in Myanmar.

Damage caused by the earthquake in Myanmar.
I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.
Difficult times can come suddenly—whether it’s a natural disaster or a personal crisis. The prophet Jeremiah, in a passage that serves as today’s psalm, assures us that God is not distant or indifferent to our troubles. He is with us, as a shepherd is with their flock, ready to bring healing and hope.
One year ago today, a catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, causing thousands of deaths and injuries and severe damage to buildings, homes and water systems.
Within hours of the earthquake, local experts were on the ground assessing needs and responding. With the support of the local Church and wider community, urgent relief reached families very quickly.
James, one of our local partners who was in Yangon when the earthquake struck, told us: “Many people, especially the children, are feeling traumatised. They are afraid of this earthquake… even if the building looks still strong, they dare not live inside.”
Thanks to your generosity, CAFOD’s partners were able to stay on the scene, helping families begin the long process of recovery. James added this special request: “We do not lose our hope… Your prayers, your support, will be very much important.”
As we reflect today on God’s presence with us in our own troubles, let’s rejoice that through our prayer and giving we can be part of the Lord’s work of turning sorrow to joy.
Prayer
Loving God,
you are close to all who suffer
May we too be close to them,
always ready to share your compassion and love.
Amen
